Bolivia Project

GPI's amazing Summer 2013 and IAP 2014 Action Team worked in Bolivia on a project to introduce a comprehensive recycling system to San Ignacio de Velasco, Bolivia. Check out their blog to find out more about what they did.

This project aims to alleviate the increasing rates of landfill waste in this community, promote environmental awareness and improve sanitation in the town. Currently, local waste-pickers collect paper, plastics and metals from the local landfill and sell them to processing plants in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. By introducing collection bins in three primary schools and holding a collection in a community, El Besito, that is not covered by normal municipal waste management services, we aim to increase waste-picker income and provide small monetary incentives to schools and communities to increase sustainability initiatives.  We are also looking to partner with large companies like Kimberly Clark to achieve this goal.

2013 Summer Traveling Team members: Judy Deng, Amita Gupta, Sydney Hodges, and Shannen Kizilski
2014 IAP Traveling Team members: Shannen Kizilksi, Keeley Erhardt, Sylvia Atsaves
